JOHANNESBURG - A survey by advocacy group Queer Quantity has found that people from the LGBTQI+ community are likely to vote for the African National Congress (ANC).

The advocacy group released the South African LGBTIQ+ election poll in Tshwane on Friday during an election debate between four political parties on issues affecting the queer community.

It says 150 people were sampled.

The latest poll by queer quantity suggests that the ANC remains appealing to the LGBTQI+ community.

Under its government, the ANC has legalised same-sex marriages and recently signed into law the hate crimes bill, which punishes discriminatory speech over gender and sexual identity, among others.

Executive director at Queer Quantity, Mpho Buntse, said that 41.8% of respondents indicated they would be voting for the ANC.

"The survey’s findings are congruent with the historical support of the LGBTIQ+ community for the ANC, which has been at the forefront of promoting equality and inclusion with regards to pushing for legislative issues."

The survey said that over 25% of respondents would be voting for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) while the number for the Democratic Alliance (DA) is at 6.5%.

A number of other opinion polls have been generated in the buildup to elections, all making predictions about how voters believe political parties will perform on May 29.
