CAPE TOWN - The Khayelitsha Regional Court on Thursday sentenced five people for their involvement in the murder of an off-duty police officer in Cape Town.

Thirty-nine-year-old Nonjongo Tabalaza, her 17-year-old son Lisakhanya, Aphiwe Potwana, Mayihlome Moshani, and Thobile Soka were arrested four years ago for killing Mzuvukile Hlahleni.

Hlahleni was killed in Khayelitsha in 2020, near the house of Nonjongo, his girlfriend at the time, after a heated argument.

Police believe the constable was stoned to death by his girlfriend's family members and close associates.

Western Cape Hawks spokesperson, Zinzi Hani, said Lisakhanya and Moshani were sentenced to ten and seven years in prison respectively for the murder.

The three others were sentenced to between six to nine months in prison for assault and grievous bodily harm.

"The acting provincial head of the directorate, Brigadier Petrus Bergh, welcomed the sentence and commended the team for the job well done."
