JOHANNESBURG - Police Minister Bheki Cele has again called on communities to help law enforcement intensify their crackdown on crime.
He was speaking in Soshanguve on Friday, at the funeral service of slain five-year-old Ditebogo Phalane.
The boy was shot during a hijacking outside his home in Soshanguve almost a week ago.
As the inconsolable friends and family of the boy gathered to pay their last respects, Cele urged residents to work with the police in fighting crime in Soshanguve.
The police minister's latest calls come amid a worrying spate of violent crimes in some areas, raising concerns about the safety of women, children and the elderly.
He said it was time for community members to stop protecting known criminals as this does not breed any results.
“If you know a person that is not working, driving BMW, parking it at your house... where do you think it came from?"
Two suspects implicated in Phalane’s matter have been arrested and appeared in court on Friday.
Cele said law enforcement would spare no resources to solve the case as the hunt for a third suspect continues.
