Can’t say no? Counsellor Mpho Mogane shares recommendations.

Tips to deal with people who feel entitled to your money

Clement Manyathela speaks to Mpho Mogane, Counsellor at Siweya Wellness Solutions.

Listen to the discussion below.

While earning your own money can bring freedom, many loved ones often feel a sense of entitlement towards your finances.

The entitlement comes through friends who constantly rely on you or family members who feel that you owe them.

“We find that usually with people who are victims in this situation, it’s difficult for them to say no… to avoid conflict and make sure they don’t upset the other person.”
– Mpho Mogane, counsellor – Siweya Wellness Solutions

It impacts not only your finances but your mental and emotional health.

To navigate people who feel entitled to your money, Mogane recommends the following:

  • Establish financial boundaries as an individual
  • Communicate your boundaries clearly. It helps to make use of ‘I’ statements
“For example, I feel overwhelmed when you constantly ask for money and I need to prioritise my own financial stability.”
– Mpho Mogane, counsellor – Siweya Wellness Solutions
  • Be firm and consistent with the boundaries you establish
  • Offer alternative solutions. While you might not be able to assist financially, you can assist emotionally
