PRETORIA - A Soshanguve family is in deep pain after their five-year-old child was shot and killed during the hijacking of his father.

The attack happened at the family home on Friday, when the little boy was welcoming his father from work at the gate.

The child's mother said they've been left to deal with emotional scars, just days after the birth of their daughter.

Just as the Phalane family was celebrating the birth of Tumi Kobe and Ditebogo Phalane Senior’s first daughter, they lost their eldest son less than a week later.

The child's grandmother, 55-year-old Flora Phalane, said it was sad that the newborn was robbed of a sibling.

“We are so happy because they were blessed with an infant. She is only five days old.”

She said she’s struggling to come to terms with her grandson’s murder.

“The rule of law needs to be strengthened so that we don’t go through this again. This is not right. I’m trying to be strong but I’m not. I’m only here because I have to be strong for my son and his wife.”

With funeral arrangements underway, she hopes police find the perpetrators.
