WC E-hailing Association to run safety campaign after Bolt driver allegedly stabbed 2 women

CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape E-hailing Association (WCEA) says it will be running a safety campaign following the stabbing of two women allegedly by a Bolt driver during a dispute about their drop-off in Dunoon.

A 39-year-old man has since been arrested and charged after the incident last weekend.

Images and videos of the women’s injuries were circulated on social media and Bolt has since said it suspended the driver in question pending an investigation.

WCEA chairperson Siyabonga Hlabisa said safety measures for passengers and drivers are often not adhered.

"There are features that have been put in place but in most cases, there are other things that we've noticed, [such as] the issue of fake profiling, [and] the issue also of improper procedures."

Hlabisa said drivers are not trained properly sometimes.

"That's why we will be running a campaign about the fact that there's not even a thing of a background check being done by some of these app companies."

The suspect will appear in court later on Friday on a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
