Ashley Mthunzi was a key role-player in the R1 billion extraction scheme that Babita Deokaran exposed just before her assassination in 2021.
Mthunzi passed away late last month, before the disciplinary process could be concluded.
The disgraced former CEO was suspended from his role in 2022, but continued to receive a salary amounting to R2.5 million.
His estate will continue to receive a massive pension payout from the Government Employee Pension Fund, as he technically died while “in service.”
Wicks says the disciplinary process for Mthunzi was ridiculously slow.
Six months after his initial suspension, the Department of Health was unable to produce a charge sheet.
“It is a significant inditement on the Gauteng Department of Health that it was not brought to conclusion before his death.”
