JOHANNESBURG - While some Katlehong residents on Gauteng's East Rand have vowed to still support the African National Congress (ANC), they are calling for government to improve their lives.
On Tuesday, the ANC took its campaign trail to the area with the help of its veteran, Tokyo Sexwale.
The party was campaigning in Ekurhuleni ward 54, an area they comfortably won by over 62% in the last local elections.
While the ANC was warmly received by the residents of Phenduka, they reminded the party that T-shirts and songs would not change their lives.
Mother of two, Masha Mazibuko, said that the area is in a backward slide.
"The main issue in Katlehong is youth unemployment. They are sitting at home and doing nothing. A lot of them have been sucked into drugs, so we need help in that department."
Self-employed 27-year-old Musa Makayile said that there were minimal job opportunities in the area.
"We don’t agree with everything the ANC does, there are times we get angry with the party but as young people, we understand some issues cannot be solved overnight."
Marsha Mabuza, Katlehong resident, said she is pleased with the ANC government however it can improve.
