JOHANNESBURG - City Power has started the process of replacing cables which were destroyed in a fire in Braamfontein last week.

The utility said that it expects the work to be completed by the end of Tuesday, following the removal of rubble from the infrastructure.

Parts of Braamfontein and surrounding areas were plunged into darkness on Workers' Day when a vandalism incident resulted in a blaze underground.

City Power said that it was continuing to explore efforts to restore supply to affected customers.

Spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, said: "The power interruption caused by the fire affects customers in Parktown, Newtown, Braamfontein, the Johannesburg CBD, and surrounding areas. The utility has, since the fire broke out, managed to restore supply to the upper Braamfontein, Braampark, Liberty Life, Metro Centre and other buildings."
