CAPE TOWN - Prominent Cape Town criminal defence attorney, William Booth, told the Western Cape High Court that slain top cop, Charl Kinnear, assisted him in a case involving an accused in the trial against alleged underworld kingpin, Nafiz Modack.
Booth testified against Modack and 14 others in court on Tuesday.
Modack and his co-accused face 124 charges related to various crimes, including the murder of Kinnear and the attempted murder of Booth.
Booth told the court how two men attempted to shoot him at his Higgovale home in April 2020.
He then detailed how another State witness, who can only be identified as "Mister C" sought his legal services for an extortion matter involving Jacques Cronje, one of Modack's co-accused.
Booth said due to the nature of the case, he contacted Kinnear, who was head of the anti-gang unit at the time, to make sure the case was properly investigated.
He told the court that Kinnear went to inspect Mister C's home after Cronje allegedly threw a brick through one of his windows.
Kinnear was shot dead outside his Bishop Lavis home in September 2020.
The trial continues.
