Lester Kiewit weighs in on the DA’s smouldering ad campaign.

Listen below.

The DA said it had a message of ‘national importance,’ when the party launched their new campaign ad - an advert where they show the South African flag burning.

As our colours turn to ash they talk about the country under a ‘coalition of corruption’ between the ANC, ‘violent EFF,’ and ‘Zuma faction.’

Right before the flag goes up in smoke, there is a reversal while they call on people to vote for the DA ‘for survival.’

This does send a strong message, but is the party reading the room with these visuals?

While freedom of speech does allow you to use the flag as you see fit, there are regulations saying it must be treated with respect.

This includes never letting the flag touch the ground, being used as a tablecloth, or being used as underclothes.

There are no rules against burning the flag, in fact it is seen as the correct way to dispose of a flag according to Southern African Vexillological Association.
