JOHANNESBURG - The South African Council of Churches (SACC) has prayed for the election of ethical leaders who will not be corrupted by money.
The council hosted a National Day of Prayer for the upcoming elections, which was attended by leaders from several political parties and officials from the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) on Sunday at the Grace Bible Church in Soweto.
Acting Secretary General of the council, reverend Mzwandile Molo, said those elected needed to do their best to solve the country's challenges.
“It is not what we do for the powerful and the connected that God will measure this moment by. It will be by what we do for the least of these in our nation. Those who are hungry in our streets, those who sleep in the shacks, those who are in dilapidated schools - these are those who are close to the heart of God.”
The president of the council, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, said politicians should never forget they are servants of the people.
“How do we roll up our sleeves and meet the needs, particularly of the poorest of the poor? How do we make people safe? It is our prayer that as the new Cabinet and new Parliament is inaugurated, it will be characterised by people who love themselves, who love this country, and who love God.”
