Probe into violent fight between teacher and pupil at Joburg school

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Education Department has launched an investigation following a fight between a teacher and grade 9 pupil at the Glenvista High School.
In a video circulating online, the pupil and teacher can be seen violently fighting in a classroom in full view of other pupils.
The video depicts the two throwing punches and hurling desks at each other, causing visible damage to school property.
The Gauteng Education department said that such ill-discipline will be not tolerated.
"The incident took place on Thursday the second of May 2024. A video of the incident was captured. The Gauteng Department of Education has since launched an investigation. The MEC has indicated that he takes the matter seriously," said department Spokesperson Steve Mabona.
The department said that the safety of all stakeholders at schools is top priority and that this matter will be dealt with swiftly.
