CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town said that electricity infrastructure vandalism and illegal connections continued to be a challenge across the metro.

The city said it recorded 223 such incidents that have already cost the municipality more than R6 million in the first quarter of 2024.

The municipality said the Mitchells Plain area had 94 incidents, which was the highest number of incidents recorded of all the districts.

Energy MMC Beverly van Reenen has called on Capetonians to stand up and help the city fight this criminality.

"We are officially launching our campaign against electricity vandalism. Let's act to protect our power! We call on communities across the city to help keep the lights on and to adopt the electricity infrastructure in their neighborhoods. Keep your eyes and ears open to energy criminality."
