JOHANNESBURG - Rise Mzansi says it wants the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) to act on claims that some listed companies are implicated in sex-for-jobs scandals.
On Tuesday, the political party picketed outside the JSE offices in Sandton, where it handed over a memorandum of demands addressed to JSE CEO, Leila Fourie.
As the country commemorated Workers’ Day on Wednesday, the party raised concern about jobseekers allegedly forced to pay cash in exchange for jobs.
Rise Mzansi said not enough was being done to root out sexual misconduct in corporate South Africa.
The party said industrial sectors, mining and retail in particular, were also breeding grounds for sexual crimes where unemployed women were exploited for sexual favours.
Rise Mzansi leader, Songezo Zibi: "There are men out there who prey on young women who are looking for work and they ask them for money and that they sleep with them, after which they don’t even give them the jobs that they promised them."
Zibi said the problem extended to the public sector.
"We are not fighting with companies. We are not fighting with municipalities. We are not saying destroy them, we are saying we want an economy that is inclusive, where the employment practices are fair."
The party said tighter employment and labour legislation was needed to protect workers and jobseekers against predators.
