Workers' Day means little as unfair labour practices persist, say Hammanskraal workers

HAMMANSKRAAL - Some workers in Hammanskraal say Workers' Day means little to them as exploitative labour practices persist. 

The workers appealed to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) labour desk to assist them with their work disputes. 

This as the red berets commemorated Workers' Day with a rally at the Temba Stadium in Hammanskraal.

Hundreds of EFF supporters attended the party's May Day rally ahead of the keynote address by party leader, Julius Malema.

Some attendees were carrying placards complaining of their work conditions. 

Emmanuel Masango said he had recently been laid off unfairly and believed Workers' Day was not for him.

“I am unemployed that’s why I came here for the EFF to help me with the situation I’m in.”

Another disgruntled worker, Phillip Mabane, said the EFF was his last hope against abusive employers.

“We want help from this, maybe they [the EFF] can help us. We are seven weeks without pay. How must our children survive? How must we survive?”

Attendees at the rally also complained about service delivery in Hammanskraal and the lack of clean tap water.
