CAPE TOWN - Alliance partners say they are geared up for the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU)'s Workers' Day celebrations taking place across all nine provinces.
They say they won’t just be celebrating Workers' Day, but also use the event as a “show of force” to mobilise support for the African National Congress (ANC) ahead of next month’s elections.
The main Workers' Day event will be held at Cape Town’s Athlone Stadium where President Cyril Ramaphosa and COSATU president Zingiswa Losi will deliver keynote speeches.
COSATU on Tuesday briefed the media about its May Day plans in Cape Town and around the country.
It says the celebrations will be a rallying point to mobilise workers as parties head towards the final stretch to the May 29th elections.
Losi said it’s been evident over the last 30 years which party supports the working class.
“What I can says is workers who are members of the organisation took a conscious decision that there is no other political party that understands the plight of workers in this country, and that stands with workers.”
ANC provincial leader JJ Tyhalisisu says it will be a “stampede” of support.
"Our structures on the ground while campaigning for the election mobilising society to participate in the May Day rally, we will make sure that it’s a stampede tomorrow [Wednesday]."
Organisers state that over 2,000 people from Palestinian support groups will also form part of the celebrations.
