Real Housewives of Durban star Nonkanyiso ‘LaConco’ Conco was the fourth celebrity to be unmasked over the weekend.

None of The Masked Singer South Africa’s esteemed detectives – J’Something, Somizi Mhlongo, Sithelo Shozi and Skhumba Hlophe – who unravelled many mysteries in Season one, had an inkling that LaConco was Season 2’s twinkling Star.

Although Somizi linked LaConco to another celeb concealing their identity, LaConco tricked the investigators with her vocal ability and confusing clue package.

This week, viewers met the last four of the original 16 masks competing for a spot in the fun-filled show’s upcoming Top 12 round.

First, Boombox amped up the competition against the majestic Owl, whereafter Star tried to outshine the supposedly scary but mega-cute Monster.

Following Star’s departure, Owl, Monster, and Boombox joined Wildebeest, Giraffe, Blue Crane, Butterfly, Diamond, Gold, Mielie, Ice Cream and Rainbow in their ongoing quest to clinch Season 2’s coveted Masked Singer Golden Trophy.

The three Mzansi superstars who have already shown face are legendary actress Nthati Moshesh (Springbok), internationally renowned comedian Celeste Ntuli (Tortoise) and award-winning Metro FM presenter Khutso Theledi (Cheetah).

When the panel of detectives and sleuths at home were introduced to Star before her battle against Monster, Sithelo was captured by Star’s confidence and stage presence.

Meanwhile, Skhumba was intrigued by her costume size and how short Star seemed to be.

Knowing that clues about Star’s identity might be hidden anywhere, the detectives zoned in on anything that might signal who the hidden celeb was.

J’Something even figured the Ndebele art and onstage signage “Ndebele Shebeen” during her sterling performance of the song “Ngilimele” by MaWhoo revealed her heritage.

Furthermore, J’Something reckoned that Star’s clue package hint about having something in common with Cinderella meant that she was either looking for love or found her noble Prince.

The MiCasa muso also thought that even though Star had a beautiful voice, singing wasn’t her bread and butter.

So, after weighing up Ama Qamata from Blood and Water and Mpoomy Ledwaba, whose Prince is Brendan Praise, J’Something settled on podcast sensation and digital entrepreneur Mpoomy.

When Skhumba heard during Star’s cryptic clue package that she wished to “blast out of speakers in our cars but ended up in our living rooms”, he jumped to the conclusion that she’s an actress.

The comedian also learned that Star came from a talented family but stated that “family” didn’t necessarily refer to the family she was born into.

This info convinced Skhumba that Sindi Dlathu from Muhvango was The Masked Singer SA’s Star.

Somizi disagreed. He pointed out that it was evident from one of Star’s clues that her father was flamboyant and affluent while her mother humbled her.

As she clearly came from a very wealthy family, living a Cinderella fairy-tale life, Star might just be his own beautiful daughter, Bahumi Madisikwane. If not Bahumi, then Dineo “Moeketsi” Langa or DBN Gogo.

This week, Sithelo, who loved Star’s performance, had the honour of asking her one direct question.

Sithelo wanted to know if she and Star had something in common. Star’s reply, “Three letters perhaps”, had Somizi shouting “DBN”.

With that, Sithelo picked actress Dineo “Moeketsi” Langa, daughter of radio host and Gagazi FM’s first female programme manager, KG Moeketsi.

After Owl’s hoots had sent Boombox to the danger zone and Star ended up there too, the final vote resulted in Star’s unmasking.

The detectives were still clueless about Star’s true identity. J’Something stuck to Mpoomy and Sithelo to Dineo.

But Somizi took a risk changing his guess to Thando Thabethe while Skhumba’s locked-in DBN Gogo.

Understandably, the foursome’s jaws dropped when LaConco emerged from behind the mask.

“I can’t sing for my life, and being on stage performing like this was all new to me,” LaConco said. “But I enjoy challenging myself. It was an experience and a half but great fun. I laughed so much inside the mask when my friends, Somizi and Sithelo, got the clues so wrong.”
