CAPE TOWN - Firefighting efforts are continuing in the Table Mountain National Park.
Authorities said lightning strikes sparked several fires along some of Cape Town's mountains on Saturday.
South African National Parks (SANParks) spokesperson, Lauren Howard-Clayton, said: "There are a number of hotspots high on the cliffs and behind Kirstenbosch. We currently have helicopters on standby to fly at first light but it might be delayed due to the wind and cloud cover on top of the mountain."
Howard-Clayton urged hikers to refrain from entering the affected areas.
“It’s still a risk. You have a risk of trees falling, as well as rocks falling, so we will assess the situation as the day goes on but we have firefighters from the city biodiversity, Table Mountain National Park, Working on Fire and ENCC that will be on the line during the day, as well as this evening."
