City of Cape Town asks public to refrain from starting fires in protected areas
The city says the current fire season has been the most devastating and record-breaking of all time in the metro.

CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town has called on the public to refrain from starting open fires, particularly in protected areas for conservation purposes such as at National Parks.
This comes after a fire broke out at Red Hill in Simon's Town on Saturday.
The city said that the current fire season has been the most devastating and record-breaking of all time in the metro.
The city's Safety and Security MMC, JP Smith said that strong winds continue to exist and an orange alert of fire danger index has been issued for Cape Town by SA Weather Service for the next few days.
"Fire statistics confirm what we all know and that this has been one of the busiest summer periods on record. While a number of residential fires showed a slight decrease. Throughout the challenges our firefighters have stood tall and I applaud their bravery and commitment. The city will continue to invest in our fire and rescue service for the benefit of our residents."
