Drunk driving remains a huge problem on South Africa's roads, often causing fatal accidents.

As we all should know, your judgment and reaction times will be affected if you're driving under the influence of alcohol.

And if you don't know what it feels like, you can now see the road through the eyes of a drunk driver with an online simulator launched by Aware.org.

Sara-Jayne Makwala King finds out more from Lebogang Mashigo, senior programmes manager at the non-profit organisation.

Mashigo says they developed 'Drunk Goggles' as a tool to give people a virtual experience of exactly what happens when you drive under the influence.

"This is another way for us to try and raise awareness of drinking and driving and to encourage individuals to make responsible decisions to only drive sober."
"We're talking about people's lives here. It's not just numbers; people are dying, it's the breadwinners."
Lebogang Mashigo, Senior Programmes Manager - Aware.org

'Drunk Goggles' is free, easy to use and can be accessed by simply logging onto the Change.org website.

You'll be immersed into a simulated bar setting where you'll freely consume virtual drinks.

Then you'll attempt to drive a vehicle and navigate roads, experiencing the effect of alcohol on your perception and driving abilities.

"As you navigate the virtual streets, you'll come face-to-face with the brutal truth about drunk driving. Forget the myths; this simulator serves up hard-hitting facts about the effects of alcohol on your brain and body. Spoiler alert: coffee won't save you."

"At  Aware.org we say: just don't do it, don't even have one drink. There are so many alternatives out there - get an Uber, get a dedicated driver or, if you're at a friend's house how about you sleep over."
Lebogang Mashigo, Senior Programmes Manager - Aware.Org
