JOHANNESBURG - Sundowns is a club that is addicted to winning and is on course to secure a seventh consecutive league title.
But nothing has quite satisfied them like the prestigious continental title that they won for the first, and only, time to date in 2016.
Tunisia’s Esperance leads their semi-final tie 1-0 ahead of tonight’s 2nd leg match and will be a challenging opponent to get past.
However, Sundowns, have a lot of confidence playing on home soil. Their last defeat in the DSTV Premiership was in September 2022 and they are currently on a 46-match unbeaten run in that competition.
The Brazilians also tend to make home-ground advantage count in the Champions League where they’ve yet to concede a goal this season and their stellar record has seen them losing just one home game in CAF competitions since 2017.
Bafana Bafana captain and Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams understands the magnitude of Friday night's game. Moreover, he and his team have their sights on bigger things like creating a legacy like that of Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who have been the champions of Africa a record 11 times.
“The main thing that we’ve picked up as a club is to be part of these major tournaments. Once you get there, you know what it takes to get to the next step. You see it from Al Ahly, people look at them and ask: ‘How are they in the final?’ It’s because of experience and the history that they’ve got as a club. We want that too,” Williams said
Kick-off at Loftus Versfeld is at 20:00.
