CAPE TOWN - A Clanwilliam man has been sentenced to life in prison by the Clanwilliam Regional Court, for the 2022 murder of his girlfriend Relebohile Ncephe.

Twenty-six-year-old Esethu Cawe stabbed Ncephe 19 times in full view of her minor child.

Following court proceedings on Friday, regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Eric Ntabazalila said Cawe committed the crime after breaching a protection order.

"The court also declared Cawe unfit to possess a firearm after he stabbed his girlfriend, Relebohile Ncephe, 19 times using two knives which broke while butchering her in front of her minor child."

Ntabazalila said Ncephe had fled to her sister’s house after obtaining a protection order due to domestic violence.

"Cawe admitted that at the time of entering her property and killing her on 22nd August 2022, the protection order was still in operation. The court sentenced him to four years direct imprisonment for the breach of a protection order, and life imprisonment for the murder."

The NPA has lamented the sentencing being the second conviction for gender-based violence and femicide this week.
