JOHANNESBURG - The son of the late struggle activist, Oliver Tambo, said that the African National Congress (ANC) needed another 30 years to realise his father’s dream.

On Wednesday, Dali Tambo attended a wreath-laying ceremony in honour of his father in Benoni.

The event was organised by the ANC, which OR Tambo led as president from 1967 to 1991.

At the ceremony, Dali Tambo recited a poem, which envisaged what his father and other departed struggle heroes would ask a current ANC member.

"John Dube, the ANC's first president and Josiah Gumede enquire: 'Tell us, what is the status of our glorious movement? Is it strong? Is it united? Is our nation more egalitarian, non-racial and harmonious society? Has the gap between rich and poor narrowed under your noble leadership?"

Dali said he would not know how to answer those questions.

Asked whether he thought his father’s dream had been realised, Dali Tambo had this to say: "Not yet. But the day is not over, the day is long, it's tough but with the ANC in power, we will achieve his dreams."

In a move to boost its chances in the hotly-contested Gauteng, the ANC will have former president, Thabo Mbeki, campaigning for it on Thursday.
