JOHANNESBURG - Public safety MMC in Johannesburg Mgcini Tshwaku said the tension between the metro cops and the South African Police Service (SAPS) was concerning.
The latest spat was sparked by the killing of a Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer at her home in Soweto during an alleged confrontation with SAPS members.

In 2023, a JMPD officer was killed outside a Braamfontein club, allegedly by a police officer in a domestic dispute.
Tshwaku said there’s a relentless unhappiness among JMPD members to work with SAPS.
“Even though colleagues are able to work with SAPS, there is this unhappiness, a very detailed one.”
Tshwaku claimed JMPD had more successes than SAPS in the city and were still frowned upon by their counterparts.
"SAPS don’t want to do operations with us. When it’s an operation inspired by JMPD, you’ll never see SAPS - never. There is an element of undermining."
He said that going forward, a parade would be undertaken by JMPD for all those who had been killed at the hands of SAPS.
