CAPE TOWN - A police officer stationed at the Paarl public order police (POP) unit has been arrested for attempted murder.
It's alleged that the 27-year-old constable had taken an official firearm home while it was meant to be booked into the safe at the police station at the end of his shift.
In the first incident, the officer allegedly pointed the gun at two people.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said the following day, he got into a taxi with a firearm and shot the taxi driver in the foot.
The officer appeared in court on Tuesday.
IPID's Phaladi Shuping said: "He appeared in the Grabouw Magistrate's Court facing charges of attempted murder, the theft of a firearm, the discharge of firearm in a municipal area, and two counts of pointing of a firearm. His case was postponed to Thursday, 25 April for judgment in the bail application."
