JOHANNESBURG - The National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), Shamila Batohi, says they’re working on preparing additional cases against Atul and Rajesh Gupta ahead of any further bid to extradite the two from the United Arab Emirates.
An extradition request South Africa previously lodged on the basis of two cases involving the brothers was refused on technical grounds in April 2023.
Batohi addressed a round table at the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)'s office in Pretoria on Wednesday, to outline the NPA’s priorities and strategic initiatives.

She also touched on their efforts to secure the Guptas attendance before South Africa’s courts.
"For us, it’s really important when we do lodge a new application for extradition that we have many more cases that are ready with regards to the Guptas, than the two that were ready when we brought the original application."
To this end, she added, they’re seeking additional capacity from the Zondo commission.
"To work with us to make sure we are able to proceed with speed on these investigations. And to make sure when another application for extradition is brought, that there aren't just more cases but they’re very well investigated and solid cases."
