CAPE TOWN - The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) in the Western Cape says it's on course to resume full train services on Cape Town's Central line.

The timeline of a full central line operation has been a pressing concern for most rail commuters in the metro.

The resumption of train services on this busy corridor has been derailed by infrastructure theft, vandalism, and shacks built on rail reserves.

PRASA regional manager Raymond Maseko said they've made significant strides in restoring train services in the Cape.

"When we started on the 7th of July 2020, we only had 19 train sets and 13 train stations that were operational. At the moment, of the 121 train stations that we have in the Western Cape, only 11 are not working. That is from Philippi to Kapteinsklip and from Stock Road to Chris Hani. That is all on the central line."

Maseko added that measures have been put in place to protect PRASA's infrastructure from vandalism and theft.

"First we increased our internal staff from about 700 and now we have about 1,300. We also have about 6 contractors that we have hired to bolster the security that we have."
