JOHANNESBURG - Fraud-accused former City of Tshwane mayor, Murunwa Makwarela, has died.
Speaker of Council of the City of Tshwane, Mncedi Ndzwanana, confirmed Makwarela’s death on Tuesday morning.
Before Makwarela became mayor, he was the Speaker and Ndzwanana succeeded him.
"It is a sad day for us because we have lost the important person, the former Speaker, the former mayor and the councillor of Tshwane, which is Dr Makwarela. He has lost his life this morning. It is a sad day for the city, it is a sad day for the office of the Speaker as well."
The details surrounding his death are not yet clear.
Makwarela was facing two counts of fraud, relating to allegations that he didn’t disclose that he was insolvent before taking up office as mayor and that after it came out, he used a fake rehabilitation to try and keep his job.
He was in court last week when he lost a bid to have the matter struck from the roll.
