CAPE TOWN - A State witness and self-confessed hitman, who said he committed murders for alleged underworld gang boss Nafiz Modack, testified that on the day he was arrested, he was given a car by one of Modack's henchmen.

The witness, who can only be identified as "Mister A", admits to murdering Nicolaas Heerschap, the father of a former Hawks officer, tow truck driver Richard Joseph, and making five attempts on criminal defence attorney, William Booth's life, all allegedly on behalf of Modack.

The cross-examination of Mister A continues in the Western Cape High Court where Modack and 14 co-accused face 124 charges for various crimes, including murder, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder.

Mister A said he was recruited to murder Heerschap, Joseph, and Booth by accused three and four, Ziyaad Poole and Toufeek Brown.

He said on the day he was arrested, on 19 August 2019, he got a phone call from Poole to fetch a car in Argyle Street, Woodstock.

Mister A said after fetching a green Toyota Tazz with a black bonnet, he was arrested after being found in possession of the same firearm that was used to kill Heerschap and Joseph.

He said after calling Brown from a holding cell, he was given a lawyer and subsequently released from custody after appearing in court on 22 August.

Both Brown and Poole deny working with Mister A on behalf of Modack.

The trial continues on Tuesday.
