JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng police have revealed that at least 248 voting stations in Gauteng will host the polls with no access to running water on 29 May.

The figure represents about 8% of voting stations across the province.

This was revealed on Tuesday in Kempton Park, where the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) hosted an Electoral Code of Conduct signing ceremony at Emperors Palace.

With a total of 6.5 six million registered voters, the Gauteng province represents the largest voting bloc countrywide.

During a presentation, Gauteng police highlighted that 326 voting stations don’t have access to electricity, while 253 won’t have sanitation facilities for voters.

Provincial Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni, however, said that there would be a full deployment of law enforcement agencies on election day.

“Our main objective will be to ensure that there is a safe and secure environment during the election period by means of prevention, combatting, investigation and maintaining public order.”

The IEC also pointed out that 416 voting stations would not have wheelchair access.
