JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) has accused the MK Party of orchestrating a takedown campaign against the governing party ahead of the hotly-contested general elections.
The party's comments follow another legal loss by the ANC after the Durban High Court ruled in favour of the MK Party in the fight to use its name and logo.
The ANC has accused the MK Party of intellectual property theft, claiming the party’s name and logo is a misappropriation of the ANC's disbanded military wing.
The court dismissed the ANC's application on Monday.
But ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said the governing party won’t back down.
"We defend what is ours. Elections may as well arrive with MK being voted with this emblem of ours but that doesn’t stop us from challenging this and this appeal will continue in that context."
Mbalula said that former president Jacob Zuma was behind the plot to bring the ANC below the 50% mark at the 29 May polls.
"So that’s what Jacob Zuma is about and his political party. If you ask him about his manifesto, where it was launched, what happened, you will not find him anywhere. This is not a political party, it’s a project meant to disrupt the ANC and not for any other purpose, for Mr Zuma's interests."
