JOHANNESBURG - The lawyer for the first accused in the Senzo Meyiwa trial has promised to expose a cover-up that he said was cooked up by the State in the football star's murder case.

On Monday, Thulani Mngomezulu, who is representing Muzi Sibiya, revisited a popular theory in Meyiwa's murder.

The defence is cross-examining one of the investigating officers in the Meyiwa case.

The Orlando Pirates captain was murdered at the home of his girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo, in October 2014.

Mngomezulu repeatedly mentioned that the police’s investigation is far from the truth, and he promised to reveal this.

While cross-examining Sergeant Batho Mogola, Mngomezulu revisited the popular narrative that the people who were in the house when Senzo Meyiwa was killed were behind his murder.

Mngomezulu claimed there were no intruders at the Khumalo home when Meyiwa was killed but he was shot in the crossfire in a fight between Longwe Twala and Zandi Khumalo.

He claimed soccer boss and Orlando Pirates chairperson, Irvin Khoza, also confirmed this to Meyiwa’s brother, Sifiso.

But the State dismissed the notion, saying Khoza deposed of a statement refuting the claims made by Sifiso.

Mogola returns to the witness stand to face more tough questions on Tuesday morning.
