JOHANNESBURG - Unemployed nurses in the North West are set to stage a sit-in at the provincial health department on Monday following its failure to absorb them after completing the community service programme.

Over 200 nurses are expected to participate in the sit-in, calling for their immediate appointment.

But the national health department said it was making headway in addressing the unemployment of healthcare workers in the country.

Some unemployed nurses in the North West have vowed to continue their sit-in at the provincial health department's headquarters until their grievances were addressed.

Union DENOSA said that the nurses were promised appointment letters at the beginning of the month but this has not been the case.

This protest follows a sit-in staged by doctors in KwaZulu-Natal for over a week at the province's health department offices earlier this month.

The national health department said that the recruitment process was ongoing and different provinces were finalising more appointments.
