CAPE TOWN - Capetonians are being urged to be extra vigilant of scammers posing as City of Cape Town electricity officials who need to scan meters or check plugs.
This after a resident reported to the municipality that two men had visited her home claiming they needed to scan the prepaid electricity meter and check plugs.
It's understood that the men were well dressed, and one of them wore a reflective jacket with a "permit" attached to the jacket and a clipboard in hand.
MMC for Energy Beverley van Reenen said that when the homeowner realised they were not who they claimed to be, she asked them to leave, but not before they stole her gold earrings.
Van Reenen said that it was fortunate that the resident realised this before anything far worse happened.
"Municipal workers and contractors must carry a work order number specific to that dwelling and a legitimate city-issued identification card. Residents should ask to check the work order number and the identification card before allowing anyone onto their property and to verify whether the card is legitimate."
