JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng residents are soon to be introduced to a new e-hailing app to mitigate the safety challenges in the industry.
Members of the taxi industry along with the Gauteng Department of Transport are launching "Shesha"- which means to hurry in isiZulu.
The National Taxi Alliance’s Piet Mahlangu says a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the two parties to put an end to the violence affecting them.
"The launch of Shesha also signifies the new-found spirit of cooperation and unity between the taxi industry. The operation is essential for building a robust economy and maintaining the safety of our communities. It's putting emphasis on safety."
This comes as tensions continue to exist between e-hailing drivers and the taxi industry across the province.
Last year, violence erupted in Soweto where e-hailing drivers were injured and some vehicles were set alight.
This followed clashes between e-hailing drivers and conventional taxis operating in the same areas.
