JOHANNESBURG - The family of one of two boys who drowned during a school camp in Centurion called on the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) to fast-track investigations into the tragedy.

Department MEC Matome Chiloane visited both families on Wednesday after visiting the Daveyton Skills School in Benoni to find out what happened.

Chiloane announced the appointment of another independent law firm to investigate the circumstances that led to the tragedy.

Chiloane said that while the independent probe would look into the matter, swift action against some educators and all those involved would be taken.

The families of the two pupils said they were hurting because they felt their children were neglected.

Family spokesperson for the 17-year-old learner, Nomusa Mathebula, said: "We’ll be glad if the department fast tracks investigations and those that are responsible are brought to justice."

Despite the heart-wrenching ordeal, school continues at Daveyton Skills School, with the addition of psychosocial support provided by the department.
