JOHANNESBURG - Allegations of abuse have been added to details emerging from an unapproved school camp which left two pupils dead this week.

Two boys aged 14 and 17 from the Daveyton Skills School in Benoni went on camp last week but did not make it home after drowning on the last day of the excursion.

Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane met with the families on Wednesday, who shared details about the alleged abuse their children were subjected to during the weekend-long trip.

The boys' families claimed their children were abused and not dropped off at home after the camp.

They claim their children were physically abused at the camp, which was spearheaded by one social worker.

They also claim that following the drowning incident, all 88 children who survived the excursion were not returned to their homes directly, but instead were dropped off several kilometres away.

A family member of the second boy explained.

“So they were never dropped off at their houses, after they had so much trauma they were just left there. I think it’s about 15km from here.”

Chiloane said although the latest revelations were concerning, the outcomes of the independent investigation would guide his department in the action that should be taken.
