It's believed the trip was organised by a non-profit organisation (NPO).

The department said one of the pupils drowned while trying to rescue another learner.

Conveying his condolences to the boys' bereaved families and school community at large, Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane added that he was deeply saddened by the tragedy.

The department said Wednesday's visit would serve as a means to uncover the circumstances that led to the unfortunate tragedy.

In an attempt to mitigate the adverse effects the incident may have on learners, teachers, and parents, the department has made support available.
