JOHANNESBURG - Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane said that a camp where two pupils died was not approved by the department.
Matome visited the Daveyton Skills School in Benoni on Wednesday morning, which the special needs boys aged between 14 and 17 attended.
The children drowned in the Hennops River on Monday while taking part in an activity at the discipline camp, organised by NGO, Rising Stars Generation.
They had been there since last Friday.
Ninety pupils, no educators, no lifeguards and yet sent on a trip which was not approved by the provincial education department.
That's how a stern Chiloane relayed the events leading up to the tragedy.
Chiloane said that those responsible would be punished.
"We find ourselves in a position where we have to suspend our educators."
He said that although the pair and the 88 others were special needs children, the school failed to take precautionary measures.
