CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says the Democratic Alliance (DA) has set a target of creating 800,000 job opportunities in the next few years, through its provincial government’s "Growth For Jobs Strategy."

Winde made the pledge during his visit to a call centre training facility in Athlone earlier on Tuesday.

He said while job opportunities would be created for residents of all ages, the focus, however, will be on young people.

It's just a little over a month before South Africans head to the polls for this year's general elections, and numerous political parties are crisscrossing the country making promises to entice voters.

Winde, who is also the Western Cape DA premier candidate, said what's different about his party's promise is that there's a track record to back it up.

He said while the Western Cape's unemployment rate is lower than other provinces, too many young people are still without jobs.

"If I say 800,000 jobs, I mean that's a stretch, I'm pushing that boundary. But I have a track record that shows it, a track record behind me that shows that businesses come here, they invest here, they enable job creation."

Winde said his government will be investing R2.9 billion over three years in youth opportunity interventions.
