JOHANNESBURG - Rise Mzansi says making trains and buses the centre of Gauteng’s public transportation system will significantly decrease the money people spend on transportation.

A study in 2020 found that more than 60% of Gauteng households spent more than the policy-approved 10% income margin on commuting.

On Monday, the party outlined its plan to create a safe, equal and prosperous Gauteng at Beyers Naude Square in Johannesburg.

"We declare that Gauteng will rise from the ashes of disrepair, neglect corruption and poor leadership," said Rise Mzansi premier candidate Vuyiswa Ramakgopa, adding that a majority of Gauteng residents still suffer from apartheid-era spatial planning.

She said the destruction of railway infrastructure meant people spend a lot of money travelling from far-flung areas into Gauteng’s business districts.

“They don’t have to replace taxis, but they will compliment taxis, they will complement ride sharing, ama-Uber and bicycles. We want people riding bicycles in bicycle lanes.”

Ramakgopa said a Rise Mzansi government will introduce a single payment card for all public transport services.
