CAPE TOWN - Cape Town firefighters Jermaine Carelse and Renaldo Duncan, and their Volunteer Wildfire Services counterparts, Liam Gannon and Steve Akester, finished the Two Oceans Half Marathon in 2 hours and 46 minutes on Sunday.

It's not the first time Carelse and Duncan braved the race, fully kitted out in their firefighting gear and a 10-kilogram self-containing breathing apparatus.

Their aim has been to raise fire safety awareness, and raise funds for Volunteer Wildfire Services.

"I don't think we did this for fun - it wasn't fun. I think it was fun for the first 500 metres. After we turned right by the garage and there was no media, we were swearing at each other,” Carelse said.

“Just for the record, Renaldo said he was going to beat me. I didn't know that at the end, the last 10 metres, that he was going to sprint while I was still waving to the crowd, and he was over the line."
