JOHANNESBURG - Union representatives said retrenchments at the South African Post Office (SAPO) would have dire consequences.

The Post Office has come under fire for letting go of close to 5,000 workers since 2024 started, as operations close in some parts of the country.

The National Union of Public Service and Allied Workers (NUPSAW) said retrenchments were happening at a time when the country was faced with an unemployment crisis.

Spokesperson, Solly Malema, condemned the move, calling it a failure by government to protect state-owned entities.

"This will have a dire impact on the lives of the workers and their families. Retrenchments [are happening] amid poor economic conditions where workers are already struggling with electricity tariff hikes and inflation is inconsiderate and unacceptable."
