John Tinniswood from Liverpool in the UK is officially the world’s oldest living man at the age of 111 years and 230 days, as of 12 April 2024.

The Guinness World Records (GWR) declared him the world’s oldest man earlier this month, after the previous record holder, 114-year-old Juan Pérez from Venezuela, passed away.

Despite his age, Tinniswood can still do most daily tasks on his own. He gets out of best unassisted, listens to the radio to keep up on the news, and manages his own finances.

Speaking to GWR, he says his secret to longevity is 'pure luck'.

“You either live long, or you live short, and you can’t do much about it.”

The 111-year-old shares advice on how to live a long and fulfilling life:

  • Do everything in moderation:

"If you drink too much, or you eat too much, or you walk too much, if you do too much of anything, you're going to suffer eventually… Never over-tax your system.”

  • Always do the best you can:

“Whether you’re learning something, or whether you’re teaching someone… give it all you’ve got. Otherwise, it’s not worth bothering.”

  • Broaden your horizons:

“Don’t stay with one thing all the time, or you’ll be on a narrow path.”
