JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg will be taking legal action against the ruling coalition led by the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

The party wants an urgent review of the alleged abuse of funds within the metro.

The coalition has been accused of diverting millions of rands towards providing luxury vehicles and VIP bodyguards to its members at an alleged cost of R28 million.

The DA said Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda and council Speaker Margaret Arnolds were living it up at the expense of hardworking taxpayers.

The party's Joburg caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku: "The DA is taking urgent action against the PA’s coalition of corruption with the ANC and EFF. We cannot stand idly by while these looters squander public funds to fund their luxury lifestyles as Joburg crumbles. We will pursue every legal avenue available to us.”

In response, the City of Johannesburg raised concern over misinformation surrounding its newly approved protection and security policy that provides security detail for the mayor and members of the executive committee.

Mayoral spokesperson Mlimandlela Ndamase said this is not a new practice, but one that was executed irregularly in 2016.

"DA MMCs in the City of Johannesburg have been enjoying this benefit and this administration seeks to put in place a policy to reverse it. But at the same time ensure that we can divert the resources back to service delivery, and the core responsibilities of the city."
