CAPE TOWN - As mop-up operations continue throughout the Western Cape following torrential downpours that have since subsided quite considerably, flooding has been reported in some parts of the Garden Route - especially in George.

This comes as severe weather conditions appear to be waning in some parts of the province.

However, heavy downpours are expected to continue throughout the day in George on Tuesday.

The region is said to have measured more than 100 millimeters of rain over the past 24 hours.

Premier Alan Winde says cleanup operations are continuing in Cape Town, the Overberg and Cape Winelands Districts as well as the Southern Cape.

Winde adds that disaster management teams are monitoring the situation in the Garden Route.

"As of 2 o'clock this morning [Tuesday] we saw lots of rain over the Garden Route region and people woke up this morning to high levels in our river system, specifically flooding in George itself and we had to close a number of roads this morning.

"Those roads are being closed but as soon as they're safe again they will be opened again."
