JOHANNESBURG - Amnesty International said it was concerned about death threats against Abahlali baseMjondolo activists.

The movement primarily campaigns for land and housing.

Amnesty International called on authorities to prioritise the well-being of one of its former leaders, Nomsa Sizani, who allegedly questioned government officials in KwaZulu-Natal over community development.

"Many of the Abahlali leadership are in hiding following death threats made against them and their families," said Amnesty International spokesperson, Shenilla Mohamed.

"The threats against Nomsa Sizani must be seen against a backdrop of a greater pattern of threats and killings of Abahlali members and leaders. Abahlali has reported that 25 of their members have been killed since the formation of the grassroots movement in 2005."
