JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) member Naledi Pandor said the Southern African Development Community (SADC) is working around the clock to block the expansion of rebel and extremist groups in the region.
Africa is plagued with several armed conflicts, including in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), South Sudan, and Mozambique.
This has led to a series of human rights violations, creating a humanitarian crisis.
South African troops were recently deployed to the DRC to help fight back against the M23 rebel group.

Speaking at an ANC media briefing on the party’s election priorities on Friday, Pandor warned that taking a passive stance on conflict could spell trouble.
“We’re the one region that has not as yet been overrun by rebel forces or extremist groupings. We’re still limited to two regions in the SADC,” she said.
“If we have an expansion of that through being weak-kneed about security, we will rue the day and we will see a Sahel in the SADC – which we don’t want.”
