JOHANNESBURG - Police vowed to continue clamping down on the sale of illicit and counterfeit goods across the country.

This followed another joint operation in Fordsburg, Johannesburg, where illicit goods worth over R11 million were seized.

The operation, which targeted 18 stores inside a shopping centre, also found over R40,000 in abandoned cash.

Over 8,000 items imitating well-known brands were seized during the operation.

Police spokesperson, Amanda van Wyk, said that officers also arrested 37 undocumented foreign nationals.

"The seized items also included various illicit electronic items, such as headphones, earphones, and Bluetooth speakers. In addition, police [collaborated] with a Brand Protector operationalised intelligence, which resulted in the seizure of counterfeit goods with an estimated value of R15 million during a bust in Fordsburg. Police arrested one suspect on charges of possession, manufacturing, and dealing in counterfeit goods."
